About Rindge, New Hampshire
Rindge is a town of 6,476 people in Cheshire County, on the Massachusetts line. In 1736 Massachusetts gave this land to soldiers from Rowley, Massachusetts, as payment for service in the 1690 expedition against French Canada, so the grant became known as Rowley-Canada. In 1740 the Crown's commissioners drew the colony boundary south of it, which put the land in New Hampshire. Governor Benning Wentworth then issued a fresh grant in 1749 under the name Monadnock No. 1.
Captain Abel Platts arrived in 1738 to claim his family's grant. Quarrels over the grants and King George's War, which broke out in 1744, drove the first settlers away. Platts and others came back in 1752, and settlement grew steadily from 1758. Governor John Wentworth incorporated the town in 1768 and named it for Captain Daniel Rindge of Portsmouth, a grant holder who had argued New Hampshire's side before the king. By 1859 Rindge had 1,274 people, and its streams powered thirteen sawmills and thirteen shingle mills, along with three gristmills and six stave mills.
- Town hall below, church aboveThe Second Rindge Meetinghouse went up in 1796 near the site of the first meeting house, built around 1766. After 1820, when the state required church and town to separate, the town took over the building and rented the upper floor to the First Congregational Church. That is still the arrangement, with town business downstairs and church services upstairs. Horse sheds stand behind it, and the town's first cemetery, from 1764, holds many early settlers and Revolutionary War veterans.
- A clearing left by a hurricaneIn 1937 the Sloanes, Douglas and Sibyl, purchased acreage northeast of the town center so each of their four children would have a place to build a home. The 1938 hurricane knocked down the woods on the plot set aside for their son Sanderson, and the fallen trees opened a view to Mount Monadnock.
- Cathedral of the PinesSandy, a pilot in the Army Air Forces, died when his plane was downed over Germany on February 22, 1944. In the hurricane clearing, his parents created an open-air memorial for people of every faith. Today it serves as a national memorial to American war dead, and stones sent from every state are set into its Altar of the Nations.
- Mary Lee Ware's farmMary Lee Ware and her mother paid for Harvard's Glass Flowers. Mary summered on the West Rindge farm her father bought in 1868 and added greenhouses, a dairy and purebred Jersey cows. The town's Grange hall bears her name. Around the turn of the twentieth century she drove a horse-drawn wagon door to door, gathering old belongings for the Rindge Historical Society's first collection. Her will left the Ingalls Memorial Library her mounted birds and animals and $5000.
- A college founded in 1962Frank S. DiPietro founded Franklin Pierce College in 1962 and named it for New Hampshire's only president. Just under a hundred students arrived in the winter of 1963, and many of their classes met in buildings in the village. The school became a university in 2007. Kim Mooney, a graduate, took charge in 2016 as the first woman to lead it.
