About River Park, Florida

River Park is a census-designated place of 6,514 people in St. Lucie County, on the land between Fort Pierce and Stuart. In the early 1950s Gardner Cowles and a group of investors bought a large stretch of that land to build a new subdivision. The plat for River Park was recorded in 1953, and the first new house there went up in 1956.

  • Started by Look's publisherGardner Cowles, who founded River Park, owned and published Look, a widely read national magazine that ran from 1937 to 1971. He and his investors put together the land for the subdivision before any homes stood on it.
  • 42 families by 1958Two years after the first new home was finished in 1956, River Park was home to 42 families. They were the earliest settlers of the community that grew into Port St. Lucie.
  • Left out of the cityThe families of River Park pioneered the Port St. Lucie area, but they never lived inside the city itself. When the City of Port St. Lucie was chartered, River Park was not included in it.
  • From 5,222 to 6,514The 2010 census counted 5,222 people here, when the area was listed as Port St. Lucie-River Park. By 2020 River Park had grown to 6,514 people on about 2.5 square miles.
