About River Road, Oregon
River Road is a census-designated place of 8,732 people in Lane County, and it is also a neighborhood on the northwest side of Eugene. Its first settlers used the Donation Land Claim program to start farms here, and they lived far from one another.
Settlement stayed scattered, with farms spaced every half mile to a mile. Over time those farms grew into large operations that raised wheat and other food, which went to supply miners during the gold rushes.
- Dairies after 1871The railroad reached the area in 1871. Dairying then became an important part of River Road's economy, and the biggest dairy farms were connected with its Danish community.
- Potter Manufacturing, 1923Brothers Wallace and Glenn Potter founded the Potter Manufacturing Company in River Road in 1923. The firm remained one of the area's important businesses until the 1980s, and the brothers' home is on the National Register as the Wallace and Glenn Potter House.
