About Roadstown, New Jersey

Roadstown is an unincorporated community of 155 people in Stow Creek Township, Cumberland County. Even before the American Revolution it counted as one of the important settlements in the region, and it grew slowly around its crossroads.

A post office opened in 1803. By 1834 Roadstown had a tavern, two stores and 20 houses, and most of the people living in them were farmers. The population had reached 200 by 1882.

“At Indian Fields, a mile east of Bridgeton, was a small neighborhood, while at Cohansey Corners (now Shiloh) and Sayre's Cross-Roads (now Roadstown) were, at most, two or three houses.”
Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland history, 1883
  • Named for a sheriffBefore it was Roadstown, the village went by Sayre's Cross-Roads or Sayre's Corners. Both names honored Ananias Sayre, a leading citizen who served as county sheriff.
  • A Baptist church from 1683The Cohansey Baptist Church was founded in 1683 and moved to Roadstown in 1802. Today it ranks as the third oldest Baptist church in New Jersey.
  • Ware chairs since 1789Maskell Ware settled in Roadstown in 1789. He farmed, and he also built chairs by hand. Collectors now seek out Ware chairs.
