About Sheppards Mill, New Jersey
Sheppards Mill is a community of 131 people in Cumberland County. It sits on the line between Greenwich Township and Hopewell Township. The town grew up beside Mill Creek, where a dam holds back Sheppards Millpond. It lies about 5 miles southwest of Bridgeton, the county seat, and less than 2 miles from the village of Greenwich.
- Road laid out in 1763Sheppard's mill was already a known stop in colonial times. On June 8, 1763, a road was laid out from Greenwich to the mill. It crossed the lower end of Springtown on the way. From the mill it went on through Bowentown to Cohansey Bridge. The 1883 history of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties records the road.
- Mill Creek and the millpondThe community is built around Mill Creek, which runs southwest into Wheaton Run. A dam on the creek makes Sheppards Millpond, in the northwest part of town. From there the water flows on through the Cohansey River watershed to Delaware Bay.
