From the North Carolina Gazetteer: "Early travelers from Salisbury to Cheraw and Camden, S.C., enjoyed good water from a rock well there, hence the name. A post office est. there 1838 as Millville, changed to Rockville in 1839 and to Rockwell in 1872."
