About Rockwood, Tennessee
Rockwood is a city of 5,444 people in Roane County, at the foot of Walden Ridge, the eastern wall of the Cumberland Plateau. During the Civil War, Union general John T. Wilder, who had run a foundry in Indiana in the 1850s, noticed the iron ore and coal in these hills. After the war he and Hiram Sanborn Chamberlain bought 900 acres here, close to the Tennessee River and to Emory Gap, where they expected railroads to come down the Plateau.
With backers from Indiana and Ohio, they chartered the Roane Iron Company on June 18, 1867, and by late 1868 a blast furnace making 15 tons a day stood at the end of today's Rockwood Street. Wilder feared that local Confederate sympathizers would turn away from a venture run by a famous Union general. He named the company town for a little-known investor, William O. Rockwood, and the town grew from 696 people in 1870 to 2,305 by 1890.
- The fight over liquorWilder opposed drinking and banned alcohol on company property, but saloons spread through town in the 1880s, and many workers showed up only a few days a week. When a state law shut saloons out of unincorporated places in 1887, part of town incorporated as East Rockwood to get around it. Rockwood itself, incorporated in 1890, banned liquor sales in 1903, yet a "jug train" from Chattanooga kept bringing it in until statewide prohibition began in 1909.
- The land sale of 1890After watching land auctions succeed in Cardiff and Harriman, Roane Iron held its own in May 1890 and sold several hundred lots for $600,000. The company opened new streets, put up hotels and let independent general stores compete with its own store. Loosening its grip that way helped Rockwood come through the Panic of 1893, which ruined neighboring Cardiff.
- Iron for the railroadsNarrow-gauge rail brought coal and ore down from the ridge to the furnace, where the coal was baked into coke to smelt the ore into pig iron. Boats carried the iron to rolling mills in Knoxville and Chattanooga for railroad building. In the early 1880s the company tried making steel, but the local ore wasn't good enough, and it gave up the effort in 1889.
- Explosion, shutdown, revivalOn October 4, 1926, a blast in the Roane Iron coal mine took 32 lives, and the costs of that and other accidents helped close the company in 1929. Former employees had already built other work in town: James Tarwater's hosiery plant, Rockwood Mills, in 1905, and Sewell Howard's Rockwood Stove Works in 1916. When World War II began, the Tennessee Products Corporation brought the old iron works back into service, making ferromanganese for the war.
- The vote for womenHarry T. Burn, the Tennessee legislator who broke the deadlock over the Nineteenth Amendment and helped give women the vote, later led the First National Bank of Rockwood as its president, holding the post from 1951 to 1965.
