About Rogers City, Michigan

Rogers City is a city of 2,850 people on the Lake Huron shore, and it is the county seat of Presque Isle County. In 1868 four men came to survey the land and log its timber: John Raymond, Albert Molitor, Frederick Denny Larke and William Evans Rogers. Many residents came to see Molitor as a despot, and he was assassinated in 1875. A post office opened in 1870 as Rogers' Mills, took the name Rogers City in 1872, was cut to Rogers in 1895 and went back to Rogers City in 1928.

The settlement became a village in 1877 and a city in 1944. A geologist named Hindshaw proved in 1908-09 that the limestone here had commercial value for industry. That stone built the Port of Calcite, inside the city, which is the largest open-pit limestone quarry anywhere in the world and one of the biggest shipping ports on the Great Lakes. Its stone goes into steel making around the lakes.

  • Lost on Lake Michigan, 1958On November 15, 1958, the limestone carrier SS Carl D. Bradley went down in a storm on Lake Michigan. Rogers City was the ship's home port. Of its 35 crew members, 33 died, and 23 of them were from Rogers City. The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum in town tells the ship's story along with the history of the port and its sailors.
  • A lumber baron's giftLumber baron Paul H. Hoeft gave the land for P. H. Hoeft State Park on January 2, 1922, and it became one of Michigan's fourteen original state parks. Its 301 acres hold a mile of sandy Lake Huron shoreline, trails through the forest and a 142-site campground that stays open even in winter.
  • The Advance since 1878The Presque Isle County Advance has reported on the area since 1878. In February 2006 a fire destroyed the newspaper's office along with Big D's Pizza. Both businesses came back, and 10 months later the Advance moved into a new building on the same site.
