About Metz, Michigan
Metz is a township of 280 people in Presque Isle County, in the northern woods of Michigan. Its first settlers were four German farmers who claimed homesteads soon after Congress passed the Homestead Act of 1862. Polish immigrants followed them in the 1870s, and the township grew around the small village of Metz.
On October 15, 1908, a forest fire spread across 2,500,000 acres of Presque Isle County and burned through most of Metz. The fire killed 42 men, women and children, and most of them were Polish or German. The disaster became known as the Metz Fire.
“When the flames approached the village of Metz, a train jammed with women and children left for Posen, five miles away.”
- The train that never escapedMany of the people who died in the 1908 fire had boarded a train to flee the flames. The heat twisted the rails beneath it, and the train left the track inside the burning forest.
- Whole families lostThe fire took mothers along with their children. Otille Erke died with four of her children, the oldest eight and the youngest two. Eufrozyna Konieczny died with three of hers, the youngest only seven months old, and Emma Hardies lost three daughters along with her own life.
- Homesteads after 1862The four German farmers who came first took up free land under the Homestead Act. Polish families arrived in the 1870s, and the two groups made up most of the community by the time of the fire.
