About Roscoe, Montana
Roscoe is a community of 16 people in Carbon County, on Montana Highway 78. When residents applied for a post office in 1901, the name they wrote down was Morris, and the office opened under that name on July 6, 1901. Four years later the town traded Morris for Roscoe, and local lore credits Nancy Morris with picking the new name.
“The story goes that local resident Nancy Morris renamed the town Roscoe after her horse.”
- First postmaster in 1901Timothy F. George ran the Morris post office when it opened on July 6, 1901. He was the first person to hold the job in the town that became Roscoe.
- Renamed on February 14, 1905Letters meant for Norris, a town in Madison County, kept getting mixed up with mail for Morris because the two names looked so alike. To end the trouble, the office dropped Morris on February 14, 1905, and took the name Roscoe instead.
- Between Red Lodge and AbsarokeeRoscoe lies on Montana Highway 78, with Absarokee 13 miles down the road one way and Red Lodge 20 miles away the other.
