About Nye, Montana

Nye is a community of 38 people in Stillwater County, Montana, and it began as a copper mining camp. In 1887 four prospectors found gold and copper in the area and founded the town. They were E. S. Case, E. R. Nichols, H. A. Thompson and Jack V. Nye, and the town carries Nye's name.

Two years later, in 1889, the Minnesota Mining and Smelting Company put up a copper smelter at Nye. It was then discovered that the company had no legal right to the site, which lay inside the Crow Indian Reservation, so the smelter was closed. The reservation boundary was moved in 1890, and mining around Nye started up again.

  • A post office since 1887Nye got its first post office on October 6, 1887, the same year the town was founded, and Thomas Ross was its first postmaster. Today it runs as a contract post office and covers a wide stretch of country, including every resident past the building at 2027 Nye Road, known as Carters Camp.
  • Platinum and palladiumThe land around Nye belongs to the Stillwater Complex, a geological province whose rocks share one mineral history, and it has long been rich chromium country. Mining is still central to the local economy: the Stillwater Mining Company works a large deposit of platinum and palladium here, the only one of its kind known in North America.
  • The Stillwater floods of 2022The Stillwater River runs past Nye, and when it rose during the Montana floods of 2022, the town was among the places hit by the high water.
