About Reed Point, Montana

Reed Point is a small community in Stillwater County, Montana. It began as a Northern Pacific railroad stop called simply Reed, named for the landowner whose ground the tracks crossed. A post office opened there under the name Reed in 1901, and five years later, in 1906, the name was changed to Reed Point.

  • Platted in 1911The settlement stayed tiny until dryland farmers began arriving. Bob Guthrie, brother of Lewis Guthrie, platted the townsite in 1911, the same year a new bridge was built across the Yellowstone River. With the farmers and the bridge, Reed Point grew from 4 farms and a handful of businesses into a community of 300 families.
  • Named for Harry ReedAccording to Wikipedia, the town is named for Harry Reed, who ran a stage station here for several years with his wife, Alice McCleary Reed. Around 1876 the Black Hills gold rush drew them west by covered wagon.
  • To the Yellowstone in 1877In the summer of 1877 the Reeds joined a party bound for the Big Horn and Yellowstone valleys, and the party lost several members in an attack. They reached the Yellowstone around the time Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce fought the Battle of Canyon Creek. Harry later carried mail to Fort Custer, nearly drowned in a Pryor Creek flood, and died months afterward.
  • Home of the RenegadesReed Point Schools teach students from kindergarten through 12th grade in town, and the teams of Reed Point High School play as the Renegades.
