About Columbus, Montana

Columbus is a town of 1,857 people and the county seat of Stillwater County, at the spot where the Stillwater River meets the Yellowstone. It started out as a stagecoach stop on the Yellowstone Trail, and later Highway 10 and Interstate 90 followed the same route along the river.

The settlement's first name was Sheep Dip, and it was later renamed Stillwater. That name caused trouble with the mail, because the Northern Pacific Railway already served a Stillwater in Minnesota. To end the confusion, the town became Columbus in 1893.

“Lying between the large sheep and cattle ranches to the south, and the wheat farms to the north, it developed as a trade center and shipping point.”
