About Rapelje, Montana

Rapelje is a community of 88 people in northern Stillwater County, 24 miles north of Columbus, reached by Montana Secondary Highway 306. It took the place of Lake Basin, an earlier town a little to the east. Surveyors laid out the townsite in 1917, and the new town took the name of John M. Rapelje. He had worked as a train master in Glendive before rising to vice president and general manager of the Northern Pacific.

Railroad jobs drew people, and the town grew to include a hotel, a grocery store, a town hall and a school for kindergarten through 12th grade. Over time it also had a cafe, an evangelical church, and later a clothing business and a violin shop. The railroad pulled out in 1980, and over the following decades many residents and businesses left. The hotel burned, the town hall came down and the grocery closed.

“Situated at the end of a Northern Pacific branch line from the main line west of Laurel, Rapelje today is a large grain-shipping center, with several elevators and other businesses.”

  • Said RAP-el-jayThe town's name is pronounced RAP-el-jay. It honors the railroad man John M. Rapelje, whose Northern Pacific line gave the town its reason to exist.
  • 24 Hours of RapeljeEach June, on the weekend nearest the summer solstice, local volunteers put on the 24 Hours of Rapelje, an endurance mountain bike race sanctioned by USA Cycling.
  • Home of the RenegadesRapelje School District still teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and Rapelje High School's teams compete as the Renegades.
