About Roseburg North, Oregon
Roseburg North is a community in Douglas County that covers the land north of Roseburg's city limits and south of Umpqua Community College. Its oldest part is Winchester, which grew up near the spot where the Applegate Trail crossed the North Umpqua River. The Umpqua Exploring Expedition founded the town in 1850, and before long it stretched along both banks of the river.
- County seat, then outvotedEarly Winchester was strong enough to serve as the Douglas County seat, and the county commissioners held their first meeting there in April 1852. In March 1855 voters chose Roseburg instead, 265 to 90. Within a few years the rest of Winchester followed the county government, as its buildings were slid on skids down to Roseburg.
- A dam from 1890In 1890 builders put the Winchester Dam across the North Umpqua River at Winchester, setting it on a foundation of log cribs. No power plant on the river was older. As Roseburg grew, it came to depend on the dam, which by 1904 supplied most of the city's water and electricity, and it ranks among the oldest dam structures still standing in Oregon.
- 4,375 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 4,375 people in Roseburg North, which takes in 22.3 square miles of land along with the old settlement of Winchester.
