About Rosharon, Texas

When the railroad was finished in 1859, the stop here was called Masterson's Station. The name came from Thomas G. Masterson, who owned a plantation close by. Trainmen gave it a nickname, Buttermilk Station. An early resident would meet the train with buttermilk in a bucket and a dipper, so the engineer and crew could have a drink.

Around 1900, engineer George Wetmore Colles Jr. bought land in the area. He named his estate the Rose of Sharon Garden Ranch for the many Cherokee roses growing there. Colles had studied at Yale, and he also designed the community water system.

  • The man who built the townTom Lochridge platted the town site and had a cotton gin moved here from Houston. The gin's engine became Rosharon's first power plant. The first telephone exchange ran from his home. In 1935 the South Texas Water Company arrived, and its rice canals drew some seventy-five to eighty rice farmers.
