About Rosita, Texas

Rosita, once called Rosita South, is a community of 3,501 people in Maverick County, and the Kickapoo Indian Reservation of Texas lies within it. The Kickapoo speak an Algonquian language and once lived a seminomadic life around the Great Lakes. One group of them came to Texas in the 1830s, then passed through the Eagle Pass area into Mexico, where the Mexican government gave them land at El Nacimiento, Coahuila, in the 1850s.

The Texas Indian Commission recognized the tribe in 1977, and federal recognition followed in 1983. That same year the U.S. government had the Secretary of the Interior place land in Maverick County in trust for the Kickapoos, so the tribe again held ground on the Texas side of the border.

  • Its own tribe in 1989In 1989 the Texas Band of Kickapoo adopted a constitution and organized apart from the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, taking the name Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas. Its preamble names the goals: to run the band's own affairs, to protect and develop its land and resources for coming generations, and to guard its political integrity and cultural identity.
  • The Kickapoo VillageThe land placed in trust for the tribe under Public Law 97-429 is known as the Kickapoo Village. The tribe's 1989 constitution covers all of those trust lands.
  • Honored by Texas in 2023On May 29, 2023, the 88th Texas Legislature adopted H.R. No. 2499, recognizing the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas. The resolution traced the tribe's long journey from the Great Lakes to Texas, into Coahuila and back to its trust land in Maverick County.
