About Rotan, Texas

Rotan is a Fisher County city near the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos and the junction of State Highways 70 and 92. Its earlier settlement, White Flat, took its name from pale gypsum sand near the surface. Railroad development in 1907 helped transform the community into a regional trade center.

  • White Flat OriginsBefore Fisher County was organized in 1886, residents had established the community known as White Flat.
  • Railroad Turning PointThe Texas Central selected the settlement as its western terminus, prompting town development in 1906 and building through the community in 1907.
  • A New NameA 1907 post office application required a new name, and the community chose Rotan for Ed Rotan of Waco, a major railroad investor.
  • Early Civic GrowthBy its 1909 incorporation, Rotan had banks, hotels, churches, utilities, an ice house, and a bottling works.
  • 2020 PopulationThe 2020 census recorded 1,332 residents, compared with 1,508 in 2010.
