About Saltaire, New York
Saltaire began in 1910 as a beach colony on Fire Island. The first residents moved in by 1912. In 1917 it became the first village on the island to incorporate. It had just 25 legal residents then, and none of them lived there in winter.
Electricity reached Saltaire in 1937 by lines across the Great South Bay. A year later the Long Island Express hurricane caused heavy damage and killed six residents. The village rebuilt. By the 1970s it had as many houses as it did before the storm.
