About Islip, New York
Islip is a town of 339,938 people in Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island. Matthias Nicoll moved to New York in 1664 from Islip, Northamptonshire, England. His son William Nicoll became a royal patentee, and in 1683 he bought a large tract from Winne-quaheagh, the sachem of Connetquot, reaching from East Islip to Bayport and north to Hauppauge and Holbrook. The town was incorporated that same year, and each year Nicoll owed Governor Thomas Dongan five bushels of good winter wheat or 25 shillings.
In 1710 the colonial government let the precinct of Islip choose its own supervisor, constable, collector and two assessors. Even so, the town grew very little until the Revolutionary War was over. In the 17 years after the war, Islip made more progress than it had in the 50 years before, thanks in part to American shipping.
- Ferries, rails and summer homesA lighthouse for Fire Island went up across the Great South Bay by 1825, and regular ferries began running from Bay Shore to Fire Island in 1862. The Long Island Rail Road reached Islip in 1867 and built its first depot. Tourists followed, hotels rose to serve them, and some visitors stayed to build summer homes. Early in the 20th century, diesel ferries took over from the old whale boats.
- From farms to suburbAfter World War II, New York City was short of housing, and families moved out to Long Island. Within ten years Islip changed from a quiet farming town into a busy suburb, once called a "bedroom" of the city. In 1950 the town had 71,000 people, and by 1970 it had 280,000. The growth slowed only as building moved farther east.
- The Garbage Barge, 1987In 1987 the Mobro 4000, the famous "Garbage Barge," ended its trip when the cargo was burned and its 430 tons of ash went into Islip's landfill. The town answered the bad publicity with Keep Islip Clean, WRAP and other programs, and the effort gave Islip a full recycling program well before most places in the country had one.
- A new voice on the boardIn 2018 four residents sued the town under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, arguing that electing the whole council at large shut out Hispanic voters, who made up a third of the town. A settlement in 2020 ended the at-large system. In 2021 Jorge Guadron, a Salvadoran American, won the new first district, which includes North Bay Shore, Brentwood and parts of Central Islip, becoming the first minority elected to the Town Council since 1683.
- A state rainfall recordOn August 12 and 13, 2014, Islip took in 13.57 inches of rain in 24 hours, a new record for the state of New York. The storm flooded the Southern State Parkway, Sunrise Highway and other main roads.
