About Brightwaters, New York

Brightwaters is a Suffolk County village of 3,181 people, part of the Town of Islip on Long Island. The name dates to 1880, when Maude Phelps, daughter of the early landowner Charles E. Phelps, looked at the sparkling ponds here and declared that so lovely a spot ought to be called Brightwaters.

For years the community had no government of its own and answered to Islip Town. In 1916 residents gathered at the Brightwaters Casino and signed a petition asking to incorporate, and the petition reached the town on September 20 of that year. On November 30, 1916, Islip's town clerk, Charles Suydam, Jr., announced that Brightwaters was now a legally incorporated village.

“as they had long tired of paying private subscription to accomplish what Town taxes ought to guarantee”

  • Ackerson's 1907 purchaseThomas Benton Ackerson, a Brooklyn man, bought the land on July 7, 1907. His firm, the T.B. Ackerson Company, already had a name for its Brooklyn projects, and it went on to develop the village. Ackerson rebuilt the old ponds and gave them paths, bridges, swans and urns full of flowers.
  • A lake named backwardAckerson gave the rebuilt ponds names: Lower and Upper Cascade, Lagoon Lake, Mirror Lake and Nosrekca Lake, which is Ackerson read in reverse. The lakes still sit just north of Montauk Highway and give the village's Lakes District its name.
  • Its own ZIP, 11718Brightwaters has its own ZIP code, 11718, separate from the Bay Shore Postal District next door, which uses 11706.
