About the Village of Babylon, New York

By 1803 a real community had grown here, and leading citizens wanted a new name. A Bible reader, Mrs. Conklin, compared the hamlet to the biblical city of Babylon. It had a bawdy name as a stop for south shore travelers. Her son Nat was appalled, but the name stuck.

The First Presbyterian Church worshipped in its original wooden building until 1778. That year British soldiers tore the church down. They carried the wood west to Hempstead and used it to build barracks for British troops.

  • A local veteran of two warsCaptain Joel Cook served through the whole Revolutionary War. He later commanded a company in the War of 1812. In 1908, the people of Babylon honored him with a monument.
