About North Babylon, New York
North Babylon is a hamlet of 17,927 people in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, on Long Island's South Shore. In 1863 the merchant Royal Phelps bought an estate here that came with a famous trout pond called The Reel. Phelps is credited with bringing the financier August Belmont out to this country district, and starting in 1867 Belmont bought 1,300 acres for a horse breeding farm and a 24-room mansion.
Belmont raised racehorses on that land, which is now Belmont Lake State Park. A flat circle of ground still lies below the Southern State Parkway, west of Belmont Avenue, where his trainers exercised the horses during the New York racing season. The tall pines that once lined his driveway still stand in the parkway's median.
- Camp Damm, 1918In the First World War, the Army Air Corps turned the racetrack on the Belmont estate into a training field, used in 1918 and 1919. It was called Camp Damm after Lieutenant Colonel Henry J. Damm, who died in service at Dayton, Ohio, on May 2, 1918.
- Elda Lake and Phelps Lane ParkThe old Phelps place changed hands several times, and one owner was the baseball star John Montgomery Ward. Dr. David and Else Schnur, Jewish refugees who had escaped Nazi Germany, built a mansion on the grounds in 1942 to serve as their country home. They renamed the pond Elda Lake by joining the first two letters of each of their first names. The property became Phelps Lane Park in 1960.
- Corbin and Guggenheim at Deer LakeAustin Corbin, the developer behind Coney Island in the 1870s who later ran the Long Island Railroad, built a summer home on what is now Deer Lake. Col. M. Robert Guggenheim later made a country estate on the same land, with a large house on Deer Park Avenue and horse stables that became the Stables Garden Center, and the lakes were long called Guggenheim Lakes. Today the land is Parkdale Estates, a neighborhood of post-war houses.
- Cruising Deer Park AvenueDeer Park Avenue is the hamlet's main shopping street, and part of it is New York State Route 231. It became known as a cruise strip, where hundreds of people gathered in the shopping centers on weekends to show off classic cars.
