About Wheatley Heights, New York

Wheatley Heights is a hamlet of 5,140 people on Long Island, within Babylon, a town of Suffolk County. For much of its past it was counted as part of Wyandanch, and the two places still share a ZIP code and a fire department.

In the 1910s, real estate investor William Geiger laid out housing developments under the Wheatley Heights name. In 1974 civic leader Hermann Griem pushed to have the local post office substation called Wheatley Heights, and that name became the identity of the whole community.

  • The Conklin house, about 1710Around 1710, Jacob and Hannah Conklin built a house here, the first in the area that later became Wheatley Heights. The family home survived more than 200 years before a fire burned it down in 1918.
  • Bricks for New York CityIn the late 1800s, brickyards in Wheatley Heights and Wyandanch turned out more than 1.6 million bricks a year. Trains carried them west to builders in New York City.
  • A village that never formedAround 2001, Wheatley Heights joined Dix Hills, East Farmingdale and Melville, all partly or wholly in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District, in a plan to incorporate together as one village, the Incorporated Village of Half Hollow Hills. The plan failed, and all four places remain unincorporated hamlets.
