About Islip Terrace, New York
Islip Terrace is a hamlet of 5,323 people in the Town of Islip, a part of Suffolk County along Long Island's South Shore. In 1914 a real estate agent from New York City built houses in the woods that lay between East Islip and the Central Islip State Hospital. Many of the hospital's workers bought homes there, and the new neighborhood grew around them.
- Germantown until World War IThe developer first called the place Germantown, hoping it would draw buyers of German descent. When Germany's role in World War I turned people against that name, the hamlet was renamed Islip Terrace, the name it still carries.
- A Lutheran church in 1915Christ Church, a Lutheran congregation, was founded in Islip Terrace in 1915, only a year after the first houses went up. It belonged to the United Lutheran Church and was one of the many Lutheran congregations started in Nassau and Suffolk during the twentieth century.
- A football title in 2007East Islip High School stands inside the hamlet. About 2,000 students in grades 9 through 12 come there from East Islip, Great River and Islip Terrace. Its football team won a championship season in 2007, and its baseball, softball and bowling teams have often ranked among the best on Long Island.
