About North Great River, New York

North Great River is a hamlet of 4,266 people on Long Island, part of Suffolk County's Town of Islip. In 1820 the Nicoll family leased part of their land beside the South Country Road to Eliphalet Snedecor, who opened a tavern on it. Travelers made it the best known stagecoach stop anywhere on the south shore.

Wealthy New York businessmen came to the tavern to fish and hunt. In 1866 a group of them bought it outright, and on April 6 of that year the group's South Side Sportsmen's Club of Long Island became a legal corporation. For more than a century the club kept the land around the tavern as a private preserve.

  • Six presidents came to fishThe club drew powerful guests. Herbert Hoover, Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Chester A. Arthur, Ulysses S. Grant and Martin Van Buren all fished or hunted on its grounds.
  • Sold to the state in 1963The club sold its land to New York State that year for $6.2 million, then leased it back and stayed on. When the lease ran out in August 1973, ordinary visitors could walk the grounds for the first time in over a century. The land became Connetquot River State Park Preserve.
  • A tavern inside a clubhouseThe Southside Sportsmens Clubhouse, a rambling Shingle Style building, still stands inside the state park preserve and is listed on the National Register. Snedecor's original 1820 tavern remains at the heart of its Main House.
