About Islandia, New York

Islandia is a village of 3,567 people in Suffolk County, on the north side of the Town of Islip. Residents spent more than three years researching their plan before they went to Islip officials on September 16, 1980. They brought a petition with 432 signatures, well past the 180 the law required, and paid the $1,000 filing fee to start the process of becoming a village.

Islip leaders, including Town Supervisor Michael LoGrande, opposed the idea, and the town sued the organizers to stop it. In December 1984 Islip dropped the fight, asking in return that at least 200 residents sign a letter pledging that the village would not keep minorities out. Voters then approved the plan, and Islandia became a village in April 1985, with Warren Raymond remembered as its founding father.

  • Long Island's newest village in 1985No new village had formed on Long Island for more than 15 years when Islandia incorporated. The one before it was Lake Grove, in 1968.
  • Levitt homes from 1963The heart of the village is a tract of 500 houses that Levitt & Sons built around 1963, with seven model homes for buyers to pick from. Salesmen told early buyers their children would go to Hauppauge schools, but the tract landed in the Central Islip district instead. It also got Central Islip's ZIP code, 11722, and was counted as part of Central Islip until 1985.
  • Suffolk County's first new casinoIn August 2016 the village board approved a casino at the Long Island Marriott, though some neighbors feared more crime and traffic. Marriott's rules forbid gambling, so the company sold the hotel to Delaware North for $40.41 million. Jake's 58 Hotel & Casino opened on February 27, 2017, with 250 video lottery terminals.
  • A headquarters brought downCA Technologies once ran its world headquarters here, but the building sat empty after the company moved its main office to New York City. New owners bought it in 2021 and brought it down with a controlled explosion in January 2024. Their plans call for as many as 8 buildings for industry and light manufacturing on the site.
