About Saltillo, Mississippi

Saltillo is a city of 4,922 people in Lee County, about 9 miles north of Tupelo. The community got its post office on July 20, 1849, while this land still belonged to the older counties of northeastern Mississippi. Exactly twenty-one years later, on July 20, 1870, Saltillo was incorporated as a town.

The railroad shaped the town early. The Mobile and Ohio Railroad laid its tracks through Saltillo by November 1860, and by 1874 the town had its own station. That line linked local farms and shops to markets up and down the route.

  • Lee County's first meetingDuring Reconstruction the legislature created a new county named for Robert E. Lee, and it chose five commissioners to set up the county government. Those men gathered for the first time in Saltillo on November 13, 1866. Tupelo later became the county seat.
  • A Republican paper in 1898R. D. Gladney started the Lee County Citizen in Saltillo in 1898. He edited and published it himself, and the paper came out twice a month.
  • Brick, cotton and lumberBy 1906 about 300 people lived in Saltillo. The town made brick and tile, ran two cotton gins and a saw mill, and had several stores and a school. Its five churches included the only Catholic church in Lee County. For banking, people went to Guntown, 5 miles to the north.
