About San Carlos, Texas
San Carlos is a community of 3,087 people in Hidalgo County, five miles east of Edinburg on State Highway 107 and about 12 miles north of the Mexican border. It began as a stop on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, which made it a station in 1927.
For years the settlement stayed tiny. From 1933 until the mid-1960s it had just two stores and roughly fifty residents, and growth came only when new homes spread across the farmland around the old station.
- A colonia in the 1960sDuring the 1960s a colonia took shape just outside San Carlos. By 1976 it held 180 houses and an estimated 880 people, many times the size of the old railroad stop.
- 3,087 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 3,087 people in San Carlos, which is part of the McAllen, Edinburg and Mission metropolitan area northeast of McAllen.
- San Carlos ElementaryChildren in San Carlos attend the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District. Parts of the community are zoned to San Carlos Elementary School, and older students go on to Memorial Middle School and Edinburg High School.
