About San Miguel, San Luis Obispo County, California

San Miguel is a community of 3,172 people in San Luis Obispo County, in the southern Salinas Valley, where the Salinan people lived long before the Spanish arrived. On July 25, 1797, Fermín de Lasuén founded Mission San Miguel Arcángel here for the Franciscans. He picked the spot because so many Salinan villages stood close by, and it became the 16th of California's 21 Franciscan missions.

The mission also broke up a long journey. Mission San Antonio de Padua and Mission San Luis Obispo lay two days apart for travelers, and San Miguel gave them a place to stop. By 1803 it counted 908 Indian people, and its herds that year included 3,223 sheep, 809 cattle, 342 horses and 29 mules. Fire destroyed most of the unfinished mission in 1806, but it was rebuilt within a year.

  • Murals from the 1820sIn the 1820s the famed artist Esteban Munrás directed the murals painted inside the mission church. The 2003 San Simeon earthquake badly damaged the sanctuary, and the Catholic Church weighed closing the parish over a repair bill estimated at $15 million. The work was finished instead, and the mission reopened.
  • Sold for $600 in 1846After Mexico secularized the missions, Californio ranchero and politician Ygnacio Coronel took over San Miguel on July 15, 1836. In 1846 Petronilo Ríos and William Reed bought it from Governor Pío Pico for $600. Reed lived here with his family and ran a store until all of them were murdered in 1848. Miners heading from Los Angeles to San Francisco later stopped here, and the old buildings became living quarters, a storeroom, a dance hall and a saloon.
  • Back in church handsIn 1859 the Catholic Church got the mission back from President James Buchanan, yet 38 years passed with no resident priest. In 1878 Padre Philip Farrelly became its first pastor since secularization. In 1928 San Miguel and Mission San Antonio de Padua both went back to the Franciscan Order, which then restored and repaired them.
  • The adobe of 1835The Rios-Caledonia Adobe went up in 1835, just south of the mission, as a house for the man in charge of the mission's lands. It was finished a year before secularization handed the mission over to Ygnacio Coronel.
