About Sand Lake, New York
Sand Lake is a town of 8,348 people in Rensselaer County, about 13 miles east of Albany. Its land was part of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, the 700,000-acre Dutch grant that Kiliaen van Rensselaer acquired in 1629. Dutch settlers moved in during the 1750s, and German pioneers came after them. When Rensselaerwyck was divided in 1792, the area was split between the new towns of Greenbush and Stephentown.
On March 21, 1812, the legislature created Sand Lake out of parts of Greenbush and Berlin, and it officially became a town on March 1, 1813, with Calvin Thompson as its first supervisor. Daniel M. Gregory became the first postmaster in 1815. On March 2, 1848, the eastern part was split off as Poestenkill, which gave Sand Lake its present borders. For decades officials met in homes and inns, until the town hall moved into the former Presbyterian Church in 1972.
- A glassworks village in 1804Jeremiah Van Rensselaer founded the Rensselaer Glass Factory in 1804 at Glass Lake, the headwaters of the Wynants Kill. A small village grew up around it, with homes for 34 workers, a store, a school and a doctor's office. It was first called Van Rensselaer Village, and also Glass House, before it took the name of its lake.
- Lakes built for the millsIn the 1850s mill owners dug a canal and built a weir and dam to send part of the Wynants Kill into Martins Lake, making it a reservoir, and raised Glass, Crystal and Crooked lakes with small dams. In 1866 the Wynantskill Improvement Association turned Martins Lake into three Burden Lakes, whose water turned the Burden water wheel. Faith Mills, a textile factory on the creek along today's Burden Lake Road, ran from 1829 to 1966.
- Ulinesville to West Sand LakeBernhard Uhlein, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, settled in the northwest corner of the town in 1793 on a 325-acre farm granted by Patroon Van Rensselaer. The settlement grew up as Ulinesville. It got a post office in 1834, with Frost Myers as postmaster, and became West Sand Lake in 1838. It is now the town's largest hamlet.
- Trolleys to Averill ParkThe Averill post office opened in 1880 with Frank Pettit as postmaster, and the hamlet became Averill Park in 1882. From 1895 to 1925 the Troy and New England Railway ran electric trolleys on a nine-mile route from Albia, in Troy, east to Averill Park. The cars brought tourists and summer residents, and the town's economy grew with them.
- A shared church from 1805Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians built the Union Meetinghouse together in 1805 so all three could worship there. It became the town's oldest public building, and it later served as a station on the Underground Railroad.
