About Sandusky, Iowa
Lee County's first white settlement was made in 1820 at what is now Sandusky. A French trader named Lemoliese settled there to trade with Native Americans. The place itself was then called Lemoliese.
Sandusky was established as a trading post in 1820. Large warehouses and machinery shops stood here during the building of the Des Moines Rapids Canal. Cut through the rapids from 1866 to 1877, the canal eased navigation on the Mississippi. The work drew worldwide attention. Lake Keokuk now covers both the rapids and the canal.
