About Wellington, Ohio
Wellington is a village in Lorain County, with 4,799 residents recorded in the 2020 census. Its beginnings date to settlers from Massachusetts in 1818, followed by incorporation in 1855. The community's history includes the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue, painter Archibald M. Willard, and several properties recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Oberlin-Wellington RescueIn 1858, abolitionists freed John Price from federal custody at Wellington's American House Hotel and helped him escape to Canada.
- Spirit of '76Painter Archibald M. Willard lived in Wellington and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, while a local museum preserves his legacy.
- Cheese HeritageDuring the late 19th century, Wellington was known as the "Cheese Capital of the World."
