About Kipton, Ohio
On April 18, 1891, two trains collided at Kipton in a deadly wreck. The crash was blamed on a crew member whose watch was running slow. Because of it, railroads adopted strict quality standards for their timepieces in 1893. A state historical marker in the village park now tells the story.
William W. Whitney platted the village around 1852, expecting a new railroad across his farm. He wanted to call it Binghamton, after his old home in New York. It was known as Camden Station instead until 1862, when it became Kipton Station.
