About Scarbro, West Virginia

Scarbro is a coal town of 461 people in Fayette County, 1.5 miles southwest of Oak Hill. By 1899 the coal baron Sam Dixon owned the place through his White Oak Fuel Co., and he named the camp for the English town of Scarborough.

The community was incorporated in 1901, two years after Dixon's company took hold. It still has its own post office, and the census counted 486 residents in 2010 before the number slipped to 461 in 2020.

  • Two stories behind the nameWikipedia tells the naming a different way. It says many of the first people to settle here carried the surname Scarbrough, and that the family name was said to call to mind Scarborough in Yorkshire. Either way, the spelling was shortened to Scarbro.
  • An art deco store from 1937Like other coal camps, Scarbro bought its goods at the company store. When the older store burned, a new one went up in 1937 to take its place, built in the art deco style.
  • A Negro League team in 1938Black ballplayers in West Virginia mostly played on teams run by coal and railroad companies. In 1938 the West Virginia Negro League, an independent league, lasted a single season, and Scarbro fielded a team in it, along with Glen Rodgers, Holden, Kimberly, Kyle and Omar.
