About Glen Jean, West Virginia
Glen Jean is a community of 90 people in Fayette County, near Oak Hill, and the 2010 census had counted 210. Two firms worked the coal here: McKell Coal and Coke and the Collins Colliery Company. The mines also made Glen Jean a railroad junction, and the town grew to have an opera house, hotels and a company store. It was incorporated in 1898, but most of the town disappeared after the coal boom ended.
- Named for Jean McKellPeople called this area White Oaks until a town was laid out here in the early 1870s. The new community took the name of Jean McKell, whose husband, Thomas G. McKell, owned the land.
- The Bank of Glen JeanThe bank building is the main structure still standing from the coal years, and it is listed on the National Register. It now serves as a visitor contact center for New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, which keeps its headquarters across the street in Glen Jean.
- World Scout Jamboree, 2019Glen Jean is home to The Summit Bechtel Reserve, the national high adventure base of the Boy Scouts of America. In 2019 the reserve hosted the 24th World Scout Jamboree.
