About Scotlandville, Louisiana
In 1912 Louisiana bought 531 acres in Scotlandville for Southern University and A&M College. Lawmakers moved the historically Black college here from New Orleans to give it more land. The campus rose on Scott's Bluff above the Mississippi River.
After World War II, Black veterans like Acie Belton of Scotlandville led voter registration drives. In 1946 only 137 Black voters were registered in the whole parish. Within a few years their work raised that number past 2,000, mostly from Scotlandville.
- Ancient mound on local groundArchaic people built earthen mounds in the area now called Scotlandville. The Monte Sano Mound stood beside Monte Sano Bayou. When it was torn down in 1967, three days of salvage digs found platforms, charcoal and beads dated before 5000 BC.
