About Seaford, Delaware
Seaford is a city of 7,957 people on the Nanticoke River in Sussex County, and it is the largest city lying wholly inside that county. It takes its name from Seaford, a town in East Sussex, England. In its early years the land around it belonged to Maryland, and Seaford was counted as part of Dorchester County along with Bridgeville, Greenwood and Middleford.
A mistake in drawing the boundary put Delaware's east-west line between Delmar and Fenwick instead of at Cape Henlopen, where it was meant to run. The quarrel went to court in London, and in 1763 the surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon fixed the final line. Seaford ended up in Delaware, and it was incorporated in 1865.
- Martin's Hundred in 1672The first recorded settlement here was a tract of 1,750 acres called Martin's Hundred, granted on January 22, 1672, to Jeremiah Jadwin of Virginia. The river carried most travel and trade, since roads only start showing up in official records around 1720. Farmers grew tobacco in a plantation style, and digs east of town point to bog iron being produced there.
- Once called Hooper's LandingPatrolman Gary R. Blake of the Seaford Police Department drew the city seal in 1961. Its ship recalls the town's old name, Hooper's Landing, and the boats that shipped goods on the Nanticoke. Other pieces stand for farming, the mills, nylon, poultry and the Nanticoke Tribe. In 2003 the City Council added 1865, the year of incorporation, and changed "Capitol" to "Capital."
- A Legion post in 1926In 1926, veterans of World War I from Seaford gathered at Burton Hardware Store to set up an American Legion post for the town. The store joined the National Register in 1978.
