About Secaucus, New Jersey
Secaucus is a town of 22,181 people in Hudson County, in the New Jersey Meadowlands. Its name likely comes from Algonquian words for "black" and "snake." The land was once an island called Sikakes, and it was part of the territory Peter Stuyvesant bought in 1658. The Smith family had settled here by 1733. Secaucus split off from North Bergen as a borough on March 12, 1900. Voters chose to make it a town on June 5, 1917, and it was incorporated two days later, on June 7.
The first farmers here grew flowers. In the early 1900s about 55 pig farms fed Newark and New York, and their owners grew rich. During World War II the farms held nearly 250,000 pigs, 16 for every person in town. The smell of the farms, rendering plants and junk yards gave Secaucus a reputation as one of the worst smelling places around New York. A 1947 ordinance banned new farms, and in the 1950s the New Jersey Turnpike took over 11 of them. A court order closed the last farms in the late 1950s.
- A pig farmer for PresidentMany of the wealthy pig farmers went into politics. The best known was Henry B. Krajewski, a pork peddler who ran for the U.S. Senate from New Jersey, ran for governor three times and ran for President twice.
- Penn Station in the marshWhen the original Pennsylvania Station in New York was torn down in 1963, its rubble was dumped in the Secaucus Meadowlands. A set of its statues was thrown out with the debris.
- The vote to join Bergen CountyIn 1969, 90% of Secaucus voters asked to leave Hudson County for Bergen County, which had lower taxes and felt more like their town. The referendum was non-binding, and only the state can redraw county lines, so Secaucus stayed in Hudson County.
- Snake HillSnake Hill, officially Laurel Hill, is a mass of diabase rock that rises some 150 feet above the marshes at the south end of town. It is now home to Laurel Hill County Park.
