About Seville, Florida

Seville is a community of 580 people in northwest Volusia County, just north of Pierson on U.S. Route 17. William Kemble Lente, an officer of the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway, where he was a vice president, laid out the town in 1882 beside the railroad's tracks and set out to build a real community there. He opened the Bank of Seville and built himself a large brick house, and with investors from the North he began work on a grand hotel and spent $60,000 on an elaborate water system.

Lente and his backers soon fell out, and the quarrel turned bitter. In 1889 he took his own life at his home in Seville. By then the town had also been hit by yellow fever, which spread across all of Florida in the summer of 1888. Many residents fled and the tourists stayed away, but the families who remained took whatever jobs came along and kept Seville going.

  • Named for a Spanish citySeville takes its name from the ancient city in Spain. The rich hammock land around the town grows a small wild orange, the Seville orange, which the Spaniards are said to have brought over and planted.
  • 125 buildings by 1888Six years after its founding, Seville was a fairly large and prosperous town. It counted 125 buildings, among them four brick stores and three hotels, along with a jail, a town hall and a schoolhouse.
  • A quiet rural town todaySeville never incorporated and is now a census-designated place. With little commercial development, it rests mostly on farming and rural life, and the 2020 census counted 580 people there.
