About Pomona Park, Florida

Pomona Park was the first town in Florida to elect a woman as mayor. Eula E. Dunn won that election and took office in 1928. She served until 1933.

Pomona took its name from the Roman goddess of fruit trees. By 1887 the area had 85 orange groves and over 14,000 bearing trees. Many grove owners left after the freeze of 1895. Even so, many citrus groves stood here during the first half of the 20th century.

  • Why Park was addedIn 1945 the town became Pomona Park. Mail for Pomona was often delivered to Pompano, Florida, by mistake. The new name did not help much, because Pompano soon added Beach to its own name.
