About Hastings, Florida

In 1918, a potato shortage up north pushed prices to 20 dollars a barrel. Hastings growers had a huge crop, and buyers rushed in paying cash. The small bank held so much money that officials called out the Home Guards. Guards patrolled each night until armored trucks moved the cash to Jacksonville banks.

In the late 1800s, Henry Flagler opened tourist hotels in St. Augustine. He wanted fresh local vegetables for his hotel guests. He persuaded his cousin, Thomas Horace Hastings, to start a farm. The small community that grew there became a town named for Hastings in 1890.
