About Butler Beach, Florida
Butler Beach is a community of 4,978 people in St. Johns County, on Anastasia Island south of St. Augustine. It carries the name of Frank B. Butler, a Black businessman from St. Augustine's Lincolnville neighborhood who did well running a grocery store and became a political activist. In 1927 he started buying land here, on the strip between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River.
After World War II, Butler turned that land into a beach resort for African Americans, who were kept off other beaches along this stretch of coast. His resort was the only one open to them between Daytona Beach and American Beach in Fernandina, and it gave Black families a place of their own on the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.
- Dr. King stayed here in 1964The civil rights movement in St. Augustine reached its peak in 1963 and 1964. In 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference came to back the local struggle, and Butler's Beach Inn was among the places where King stayed.
- A Black History Trail stopThe ground where Frank Butler ran his beach resort is now one of the stops along the St. Johns County Black History Trail.
- 4,978 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 4,978 people in Butler Beach, up from 4,951 in 2010. The community covers 2.5 square miles, all of it land.
