About Vilano Beach, Florida

Vilano Beach is a community of 2,514 people in St. Johns County, at the southern tip of San Pablo Island. The St. Augustine & Atlantic Corporation, led by the New York philanthropist August Heckscher, platted a large development here under the name Vilano Beach. In 1926 and 1927 the company built an oceanfront casino to anchor the project, and the first cars reached the island over a palm log bridge across the North River.

  • A saltwater pool by the seaThe casino was a piece of monumental architecture, and its saltwater swimming pool ran 150 feet long and 50 feet wide. Crowds came for big name bands from New York, along with vaudeville acts, theme parties and dances.
  • Taken by the oceanHeckscher's resort plan collapsed during the Great Depression. The storms of 1938 and 1939 then broke up the empty casino and carried it off into the Atlantic. In 2004 a public recreation area opened on the ground where it had stood.
  • Vilano with one LFrom 1990 to 2010 the Census Bureau listed the community as Villano Beach. The 2020 census fixed the spelling and used Vilano Beach, with a single L.
