About Sewell, New Jersey
Sewell is a community of 3,346 people in Mantua Township, Gloucester County, and its neighborhoods spill over into Washington Township. Its earliest name was Chewsville, after the Chew family, and the Jesse Chew House and the family's cemetery still stand as reminders of the township's Revolutionary War years.
The settlement was later called Barnsboro Station, since a stagecoach line linked it to Barnsboro. During the 1880s both the railroad and its station were moved, and the new depot was named Sewell Station. The community became Sewell City, honoring General William Joyce Sewell, a railroad officer who also served as a United States Senator.
“This stairway was horsed up by John Faust and Harry Hankins and was finished by John Faust and Chas. Schneider.”
- A station built in 1888The men who built the Sewell Railroad Station signed their work. On April 24, 2025, crews clearing around the old basement staircase found a jar, and inside were the builders' notes, dated Oct. 8th, 1888, telling who put up the stairs and who finished the waiting room and the office.
- The world's last greensand mineThe Inversand marl pit in Sewell is the last greensand mine in the world still at work. Its fossils have made it famous among paleontologists, since it resembles many of the sites Edward Drinker Cope and other early fossil hunters studied.
- The county's first state parkIn November 2015, Tall Pines State Preserve became the first state park in Gloucester County, with 111 acres along the line between Deptford and Mantua townships. The land began as forest, later grew asparagus and then became a golf course. Four groups saved it: the state's Green Acres Program, the Gloucester County Nature Club, the Friends of Tall Pines and the South Jersey Land and Water Trust.
