About Pitman, New Jersey

Pitman is a borough of 8,780 people in Gloucester County, and it takes its name from the Rev. Charles Pitman, a Methodist minister. It began in 1871, when land straddling Glassboro and Mantua Township was picked for a Methodist summer camp meeting. In 1872 the New Jersey Conference Camp Meeting Association received its charter, took charge of the land and started laying out the grounds.

The planners put an auditorium on a central meeting ground and ran twelve roads out from it like the spokes of a wheel. This became the Pitman Grove. Worshipers first pitched tents along those roads, but cottages gradually took their place, and by the 1880s there were 400 of them. Families began living there all year, so a public school opened in 1884.

  • A borough by vote in 1905By 1887 shops had appeared north of the Grove, in a section then called Arbutus Hill, and Alcyon Park opened in 1892. The Grove's directors tried to keep the place a Methodist retreat. In 1904, however, its residents voted 122 to 35 to incorporate as a borough of their own, and Governor Edward C. Stokes signed the law making it official on May 24, 1905.
  • Dry until 2014Pitman banned alcohol sales until August 2014. The borough council passed an ordinance allowing liquor licenses in 2015, and two breweries opened tasting rooms in the Uptown business district in 2016, under a state law that lets them sell beer by the glass. That November, nearly 65% of voters backed liquor licenses in a non-binding referendum.
