About Southport, New York
Southport is a town in the southwestern corner of Chemung County, just southwest of Elmira, with Pennsylvania along its southern line and the Chemung River on part of its northern edge. Settlers first came around 1786. They put up a school in 1799 and a church in 1819, and Southport was incorporated as a town in 1822.
In 1867 the town gave up land on two sides. Its northern section was donated to the City of Elmira, and another part went into the new town of Ashland. Farming kept Southport strong anyway. By 1875 it was the leading farm town in the county, with 375 farms sending vegetables, fruit, butter, milk and eggs to Elmira, Ashland and other markets, and tobacco soon became a major crop that helped the local economy.
- Mills on Seeley CreekSeeley Creek, named for an early settler family, runs north through the town to the Chemung River. Its water powered tanneries along with saw, woolen and grist mills. Other businesses in the area included butchers, quarries and sugar bushes, plus a cheese factory and a canning factory. Settlers reached Pine City, named for its many pine trees, around 1830, and Hendy Creek about ten years later.
- The plank road southFrom 1848 to 1890, travelers heading from Elmira toward Pennsylvania took a plank road through Bulkhead, Pine City, Webb Mills and Seeley Creek. It was the chief route to the state line until Pennsylvania Avenue offered a smoother trip in 1901.
- Schools joined Elmira in 1957That year Southport's own school district became part of the Elmira City School District. The small rural schools soon closed, and their students went on to bigger buildings: Southside High School, Hendy Avenue School and the newly built Broadway Elementary School.
- A seal cast in bronzeOn April 12, 1978, the Southport Historical Society opened a contest, with cash prizes for residents, to design the town's first seal. Judges picked Ralph F. Enyedy's design on June 1, 1979. The society gave an adapted version to the town on October 9, 1979, the Town Board accepted it by Resolution No. 177-79, and the finished bronze seal went to the Town Clerk and Town Board on November 13, 1979.
