About Big Flats, New York
Big Flats is a town in Chemung County, at the county's western edge west of Elmira, where it meets Steuben County. The area was once called Great Plains, and in 1822 it was split off from the town of Elmira and organized as a town of its own named Big Flats. The name describes the land well. It is a wide, mostly level river valley that runs from northeast to southwest, with the Chemung River crossing its southern part and Sing Sing Creek flowing through the middle to join it.
- Tobacco on the flatsThe level valley floor has long made good farmland, and farmers here grew tobacco along with their other crops.
- Seashells in the shaleThe rock under the town is mostly shale. Patient searchers can still find fossil seashells in it, which show that this valley was once the bottom of an ancient sea.
- Gliders on Harris HillHarris Hill rises south of Elmira Corning Regional Airport, which also stands in the town. A small gliderport on the hill handles motorless aircraft, and the National Soaring Museum is in Big Flats too.
