About West Elmira, New York
West Elmira is a suburban community of 4,850 people in Chemung County, New York. It lies on the north bank of the Chemung River, in the southwestern corner of the town of Elmira, right beside the west side of the city of Elmira. Colonel John Hendy arrived in the area in 1779 and became one of its earliest farmers, and he was still living here half a century later, when the valley began building its canal.
- A log cabin in 1788Nine years after he arrived, Hendy built a log cabin in what is now West Elmira and started farming the land. By 1830 he had become the area's oldest resident.
- Ground broken July 4, 1830On Independence Day in 1830, the aging Hendy broke ground for the Chemung Canal. The new waterway gave Elmira a route north to Seneca Lake, and from there boats could reach the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes.
- Hendy Avenue SchoolAs of 2004, children in the Elmira City School District part of West Elmira were zoned to Hendy Avenue School. Until 2014, older students north of the Chemung River attended Ernie Davis Middle School, then finished at Elmira Free Academy. Today the district sends them to Broadway Academy, Ernie Davis Academy and Elmira High School.
