About Shaftsbury, Vermont

Shaftsbury is a town of 3,598 people in Bennington County, on Vermont's western border with New York. Benning Wentworth, the governor of New Hampshire, granted its charter on August 20, 1761, and gave it the name of the Earl of Shaftesbury. Through the middle of the 1800s, Shaftsbury Center, on the eastern side of the Taconic Range, was the heart of town life, home to its first church and its town meetinghouse.

In June 1843, people fleeing slavery took shelter on a Shaftsbury farm, the earliest Underground Railroad case on record in Vermont. When the railroad was built through town in 1850, its tracks missed Shaftsbury Center. Stores and town business followed the trains to South Shaftsbury, which put up a new town hall in 1880, and most of the old Center is now a historic district.

  • Governor Galusha's innJonas Galusha kept an inn at Shaftsbury Center, and people gathered there during the Revolutionary War and the fight over Vermont's independence. He fought at Hubbardton and Bennington, was the county's sheriff in the 1780s and later became governor of Vermont. He started his homestead at 3871 Route 7A in 1783 and added to it in 1805, and it keeps hinges and latches from his own forge. The Shaftsbury Historical Society makes its home there today.
  • Frost's stone house, 1920Robert Frost bought the Peleg Cole farm, called the Half Stone House, in 1920, planning to grow apples. The house had been built in 1769 from stone and timber found nearby. Frost lived there until 1929 and wrote the poems of New Hampshire in it, including "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." He was still living there in 1924, the year his first Pulitzer Prize came. It's now a museum, owned by Bennington College since 2017.
  • The Gully on Buck Hill RoadFrost added a second farm in 1929. Called The Gully, it was a Cape built around 1790 on 153 acres. It was his main home until 1938, and he turned two small buildings on the property into places to write. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice more while living there, in 1931 and 1937. The farm is in private hands today.
  • A tavern on the state lineThe brick David Mathews House, built about 1800 on Route 67, sits right across the Vermont and New York line and later served as a tavern. People said a New York judge couldn't convict a defendant who sat on the Vermont side of the room. On Route 7A, the master builder Lavius Fillmore designed the Munro-Hawkins House in 1807 for Joseph Munro, a wealthy farmer.
  • The Dear Jane quiltJane Stickle, born in Shaftsbury in 1817, spent her married life here. In 1863 she completed a quilt of 5,602 pieces arranged in 169 five-inch blocks, most of her own design, and stitched "In War Time 1863" into one corner. That fall it took a $2 prize at the county fair. Today people call it the "Dear Jane" quilt, and its owner, the Bennington Museum, displays it briefly each autumn.
